2. Toxic Spill
The Toxic Spill is an area unlike any other. It is open to all ranks starting at Hero level. However, Heroes can only hunt here during a very limited time. The pollution levels rise and fall, and when they rise above Hero level, the minimum rank requirement to enter is Knight. After a while the level will rise again, and then only Lords/Ladies and above can enter, and so on.
In a nutshell, this is what happened: The experiments in the Laboratory have mutated some mice by contaminating them with hazardous materials. Some of these mice are so strong that only the most experienced hunters with the very best traps stand a chance to catch them. Washing away the contamination requires lots of water, which is why you need to use a Hydro type trap in this area.
The cheese of choice is Rancid Radioactive Blue Cheese. There are 3 different ways to obtain it, 4 if you count the Marketplace. You will need regular Radioactive Blue Cheese and maybe Radioactive Sludge as well, depending on which method of obtaining you go for. For those with lots of SB+ to convert, there is also Magical Rancid. This cheese can attract high level Spill mice even in lower levels, where these mice usually are not present.
Once you’ve flung yourself into this world of slime and neon goo, just keep sounding the horn. Gather as much Crude Pollutinum as you can. Once your barrel is full, you should start refining it by clicking the “Refine” option on the HUD. Careful though, while you refine the mice can steal your hard-earned Pollutinum if you are unable to catch them! After successful refining, you may use the Pollutinum in various crafting recipes. Once you’ve gathered everything you need from the area, you can use it to craft Empowered Brie and Empowered SB+. They behave just like the regular varietes, with the exception that they give your trap a power boost. These are the first types of cheese that actively help with catching the mice.
If you happen to use Rotten or Super Rotten charms, you can collect Soapy Suds, ingredient of the Polluted’s nemesis, the Soap Charm. These can help you in securing your Pollutinum as you refine it, making it impossible for the mice to steal it, even if you fail to catch them. You also need lots of Soapy Suds to craft new Bases as well, though. So maybe going for the Charms straight away is not advisable. Of course, before you can craft the new Bases, you first need the Blueprints. These, as well as several other interesting things, can be looted from the mice. Canister Rings are also worth mentioning, as they can be used in increasing the size of your Crude Pollutinum collecting barrel.
Since the mice of the spill are somewhat tough, especially if you enter the moment you’re admitted, it may be beneficial to try and hunt with a rather powerful/lucky charm instead of breaking out the Rotten Charms straight away. Since the most powerful mice go back into hiding when the Spill level falls, that seems like the most logical time to take off a little of the edge of your trap by applying lesser charms. Of course, this piece of strategy won’t do you any good if you’re of Hero rank.
The reason why obtaining the S.U.P.E.R. Scum Scrubber Trap is optional is the time and effort needed to acquire it. If you have time on your hands, it certainly is an upgrade to what you’ve come across so far. However, if you are ready to move on in the storyline, you may do so without this trap, and you’ll still be fine. Chances are that by the time you can acquire the trap, you will already be close to the Slushy Shoreline or may have already crafted the Steam Laser Mk. I instead, which is comparable in stats. In the end, the Toxic Spill is just a sidequest.
* Help clean up the Toxic Spill once your rank allows it.
* Hope for rare loot drops.
* Use stronger charms at higher levels and switch to (Super) Rotten Charms once the Spill falls to lower levels. Collect Soapy Suds.
* Refine your Crude Pollutinum once your barrel is full.
