(Limited Edition) Traps and Bases

Everything that‘s Limited Edition (LE) will never come back. If you don‘t get itRonza during the time it is available, you will never be able to get it again. Limited Edition items are released during certain Events. The most important of these Events is the periodic visit of the flying merchant, Ronza, who visits the Kingdom of Gnawnia in regular yet unforeseeable intervals. She’s usually out searching the world for strong traps, bases, and charms. And when she comes, she opens her shop for a few days and sells to hunters who are lucky enough to be around and can pay her often incredibly high prices. After a short while, she‘s gone again and people might have to wait an entire year or longer for her to return. Don‘t ask when Ronza‘s next visit will be. Nobody knows, probably not even the Devs themselves. (Well, that is until they decide on a date, of course.)

LE shieldIf you arm an LE trap and/or base, an LE emblem will appear in your setup window.

Usually, no LE trap is better than the top trap of its particular power type. So there‘s no reason to feel cheated. Sure, LE stuff can be tremendously helpful for lower ranks, but in the end the playing field is leveled.

In this chapter I will attempt to give my personal recommendations concerning some Bases and Weapons. I will try to outline the natural progression through the walk of the game. This has become rather difficult, because so many different things factor into the decision of buying or arming a certain piece of equipment. It used to be simple, because one Base or one Weapon was stronger than the other. Recommendation done! These days though, things have become much more diverse, and often not just brute force or sheer luck will decide a piece of equipment’s worth, but special abilities may come into play.
I will not mention every single Base or Weapon. There are just too many in the game by now. The ones I mention are the ones that I recommend getting as you go through the game.

Limited Edition equipment is another story altogether. My recommendations will be lined out as if there are no LE Bases or Weapons. If you happen to have a stronger or luckier LE item, do the math, compare the stats, and see if you wouldn’t benefit from arming it instead of going with my recommendations. I always calculate that 1 Luck is roughly equal to 300 Power. However, it is worth noting that the Luck effect rises exponentially, so the more Luck an item has, the bigger the effect on catch rate will be. Another thing to keep in mind is that tougher mice are more affected by Power than by Luck. There’s a bit of a shift in the game where it starts to make sense to go with more Power rather than more Luck. This roughly starts around Duke level and is certainly true for the Rift areas.

LE items
In this section I will give recommendations for new LE items as they pop up in the game, either during an event or during a Ronza visit. Once this happens, make sure to come here and I will have updated this part of the guide, so that you know if a certain LE item is worth buying or not.
Once the LE items in question become unavailable, I will delete their entry from the guide to make room for future LE stuff.

~ Stay tuned! ~

—————————————————————————————————————————————

Bases
This is my recommendation for the early ranks. Go from Base to Base like I outline below. You may skip every other non-LE Base you encounter in between:

Wooden Base
Wooden Base with Target
Fan Base
Dehydration Base
Bamboozler Base
Aqua Base

If at any point you acquire a Base from an event that has at least 8 Luck, any Base from the above list becomes obsolete and you should stick with your event and/or LE Base for general hunting.

The next non-LE base you want to get is the Overgrown Ember Stone Base at the Queso River. Not only will it be able to beat several LE Bases you may have acquired in the meantime, but it also pumps extra Bland Queso from the river, and should therefore be the standard Base when hunting in the area.

The next better Base is the Minotaur Base from the Labyrinth and City of Zokor complex. It is the best Base at this point, potentially only edged out by the Prestige Base, acquired in the Valour Rift. The Prestige Base gains stats according to which floor you can make it to in that area, as well as your number of Total Eclipse catches during one run.
Alternatively, the Mino Base can be improved upon by getting the Adorned Empyrean Refractor Base in the Floating Islands, but the Prestige Base can be made to even outclass this Base! So depending on your Prestige Base stats when you enter the Floating Islands, you may be able to skip the Adorned Empyrean Refractor Base altogether.

As far as Rift Bases go, the general progression is:
Rift Base
Fracture Base
Fissure Base
You need both Rift and Fracture Base in order to get the Fissure Base.

Since Fissure Base is a requirement for Clockwork Base, I think it’s inevitable that you get the entire set eventually. Also, you really want to have at least some Rift Base for the earlier Rift areas to get the Riftstalker Set (Rift Weapon, Rift Base, and Rift Charm combination).
After Clockwork, you will want to go for the Prestige Base, and not just for the Rift areas, as it can potentially be made more powerful than even Mino and Empyrean.

Some other Bases worth considering for certain locations are the following (sorted by early access area to later access area). Those in bold are strongly recommended for crafting/purchasing.

Forbidden Grove:
Runic Base (LE) (loot extra Runes)

Hearthstone Base (repels Zealots in Mad Depths)
Deep Freeze Base (opens up Hidden Depths)
Ultimate Iceberg Base (LE) or Iceberg Boiler Base (all of the above combined)

Fort Rox:

Labyrinth:
Labyrinth Base (reduces chance of Dead End Clues)
Treasure Seeker Base (LE) (reduces chance of Dead End Clues; chance to change clues into Treasury clue)
Compass Magnet Base (LE) (30% chance of removing a Dead End Clue after every hunt, even within intersections)
Minotaur Base (reduces chance of Dead End Clues)
Thief Base (LE) (in Stealth mode: 50% chance of not losing stealth; in Heist mode: losing twice as much stealth, but also gaining twice as much loot)

Moussu Picchu:
Denture Base and Signature Series Denture Base (can be fueled with Ful’Mina toothlets for extra stats and then used anywhere in the kingdom)
Forecaster Base (LE) (doubles weather intensity gained)

Furoma Rift:
Enerchi Induction Base (loot extra Enerchi)
Attuned Enerchi Induction Base (loot extra Enerchi and Battery Fragments)

VVT is better than Chesla’s ? 😮 I know the luck plays a big part in it, but Chesla’s seem to perform better overall doesn’t it ? Especially on MOJOs. Just my personal experience

In that situation Chesla might actually have the edge, since it lacks luck but is more powerful, which is good if you’re up against very powerful boss mice. For less high profile targets I’d give the edge to VVT.
It is indeed tough to compare these, though. And it probably doesn’t make much of a difference in this case, against Mojo they are probably on par 🙂

I would put Chesla’s Revenge either as roughly equal to VVT or in front of VVT. Chesla’s 1000+ power more than makes up for the 1 luck edge ZFM has. Of course, it is debatable wether 4 luck is better or less than 1000+ power, so like I said, roughly equal or better.

    How good is Snow Barrage?

    • MozKa

      May 14, 2015 at 9:39 am

Hard to say. Very high luck, very low power. It’s a decent trap for everything up to Warpath, after that it will probably be advisable to get something stronger.

        July 17, 2015 at 7:31 am

So it’s fine to use it for Tribal Isles and Zugzwang and not get HVMT or First Move?

          July 17, 2015 at 10:26 pm

It might work, yes. I’d say it’s definitely good enough for the Tribal Isles. I would try a Tower run with it, and if it doesn’t seem to totally suck it’s probably ok to skip the other traps.

Isnt the dreaded totem trap>the maniacle BE? I mean 3000 power vs 2600, 15% p.bonus vs 10% and only losing out by 3 luck :/ definitely weaker than perch but these two are debatable

    • MozKa

      August 20, 2015 at 6:07 am

I chose to give the edge to the Maniacal Brain Extractor, because I think in combination with the right base the power bonus might make more of a difference than the Luck stats, especially with a Luck level that low (the higher the luck, the more it makes a difference, since the effect rises exponentially, not in a linear fashion as it is with power).
But you’re right, the difference is not very big. In the end the two traps might be on par.

I agree with you that the Dreaded Totem was made to give hunters the edge specifically in JoD. So Maniacal Brain Extractor might be better than Dreaded Totem elsewhere.
For those who only has a Portal trap and wish to hunt in JoD(and doesnt have Dreaded Totem) should he get Gorgons or Clockapult?
So Fissure base is better than Tidal base? (That means currently it’s the best in the whole game!)
Where is Warpath Thrasher in the Physical section?
And is Steam MK I better than Heatbath? because i think Heatbath is really expensive and a Steam MK I has better stats.

    • MozKa

      September 5, 2015 at 5:27 pm

If you have the gold, definitely go with Clockapult. If not, maybe you will opt for earning it instead of going with Gorgon. If you want to move on quickly, Gorgon will be fine. But keep in mind that sooner or later you’ll need the Clockapult anyway in order to craft the Clockwork Portal.

Yes, Fissure Base is indeed the best base as of this moment. Maybe there is some rarely used trap/base/charm combination that would give the Tidal Base the edge… But I doubt it would come up very often in everyday hunting.

The Warpath Thrasher is hard to compare with the other traps, because its stats are so dependend on the amount of mice still left in the wave. I chose not to put it on this page for that reason. It’s just too special 🙂 And, let’s face it, since the introduction of the Chrome Monstro, it no longer serves any purpose, as Chromstro beats it.

Yes, Steam Laser Mk. I is better than Heat Bath. Luck is the same, Power stats are higher 🙂 Heat Bath has become a pure collectors item. Nobody should get it to actually hunt with it. And if you’re not a collector, don’t bother with it.

mts or eerrier base ? :3

If by mts you mean Molten Shrapnel Base, definitely Eerier. Almost same power, more luck.

You updated the bases for the Labyrinth, but neglected to even add how much better the last LE CNY base, the Sheep Jade is, when compared to the Horse/Snake Jade base.

Also haven’t added in the Physical Brace base, which is a hell of a lot better than a lot of the bases when in Physical trap areas, like Warpath and Derr Dunes.

    • MozKa

      November 26, 2015 at 10:00 pm

Yeah, I should change it to […] Jade Base, I don’t want to have to add every single one 🙂
And I left out the Physical Brace Base, because it’s just too much of an oddity to safely and correctly compare it to other bases. I might try and think of a way to at least mention it though.

Hey got a question, with the introduction of minotaur base, and taking into account the gold cost, would it be better for us to skip rift base and farm for mino base first? Since it would help to a greater extent in farming gold in Brift compared to rift base.

    • MozKa

      July 6, 2016 at 1:16 am

I guess that would be an option. It’s up to you though, I can’t say if it’s the way to go for you 🙂 Depends on your preferences.

The +1000 power enhancement of the Depth Charge Base is what makes it so special while diving in Sunken City where it even beats the Tidal base (and almost all the others) hands down. Elsewhere, with its +10 luck, I find the Depth Charge base stats are nearly equal to both the [Monkey] Jade and Eerier bases.

Where would the PartyBot, with its massive 25 luck, fit in the Physical trap bracket?

    • MozKa

      December 17, 2016 at 11:10 pm

I’d say it’s probably comparable to the Enraged Rhino. I wouldn’t go so far as to call 25 luck “massive”, many Physical weapons come close or surpass that, while at the same time having more power, sometimes much more power.

CRE has Anni reapers better than both interims Sonal crossbow and goldfrost. By about 2 catches per hundred hunts.

It’s above temporal turbine too by.. about 1 per hundred, and below chrome temporal by 1.5/100.

    • MozKa

      March 26, 2018 at 10:17 pm

Yeah, these new anniversary traps are hard to classify, because of the 10% chance of a guaranteed catch for a mouse of any strength. All I could do without data was to look at the stats of the traps and compare those. And even then it’s only ever a vague guess, because of the incalculable (at least for me 🙂 ) luck factor.

How does molten shrapnel base tie spellbook?

    • MozKa

      April 4, 2018 at 10:05 pm

Spellbook is better. The difference will not be dramatic though.
I don’t recommend getting any of the two though, during events there are cheaper and better bases to be acquired each year 🙂

      • DV

        April 5, 2018 at 3:15 pm

Strongest base rn is the 10 layer bday cake base from the recent birthday event. Was thinking of getting the spellbook base before advancing to warpath. Should I just stick with the 10 layer base instead?

        • MozKa

          April 5, 2018 at 9:54 pm

Yes, that one will do fine. Spellbook has more power but less luck. Rule of thumb is power is more important for tough (boss) mice, while more luck helps with the other mice. Any 10 Luck base for the Warpath is good enough. The effort it takes to get Spellbook is not worth it in this case.

Sorry couldn’t find the comment section on Fort Rox page. Do you think nightlight charm worth buying now from Ronza to effectively help progressing in Fort Rox?

    • MozKa

      July 30, 2018 at 11:14 pm

Yeah, I think it’s useful. Depends on your traps of course, and apparently they are more useful the later it gets at night. So a bit hard to calculate, but all in all I think they could be worth it for certain types of situations.

Hi. Weapon stats are out for the traps in Queso Canyon. Are they the best traps in the game compared to SOS, Chrome Sphnyx Wrath, Chrome Monstrobot and Chrome Storm Wrought Ballista Trap?
    1. Queso Flount Trap Hydro
    2. Gouging geyserite Trap Tactical
    3. Smoldering Stone Sentinel Trap Physical
    4. Dragon Slayer Cannon Draconic
    Thank you.

    • MozKa

      May 24, 2019 at 10:53 pm

In most cases, yes. Although some of the older traps are higher in Luck, the new traps are all higher in Power and Power Bonus. There may be a very few unlikely scenarios where the higher luck of the older traps may be an advantage, but in probably 95%+ of all cases the new traps will beat them.

I have been thinking of how to re-do the Traps and Bases page, as I feel it’s getting too full and isn’t that user-friendly anymore. But so far I haven’t found a solution yet, so stay tuned, I guess 🙂

Sir I hope you can give me a recommendation in what shadow trap to go with right now. My current rank is baron and hunting in seasonal garden, the only best trap I have right now for shadow type is gorgon. My question is shall I buy the LE moonbeam traptrapor or should I save my money and just wait to get the reaper’s perch or the crossbow. Pls sir help me decide. I’ve been having a hard time grinding for gold so I’m a bit hesitant to buy the LE trap. Thank you in advance for your help.

        • MozKa

          June 28, 2019 at 11:05 pm

Definitely DON’T get the Reaper’s Perch! It’s outdated now, you can get other traps that are better, cheaper, and easier to come by.
Honestly, in your case I would buy the Moonbeam Barrier trap. The Interdimensional Crossbow trap is better, but it’s also way more expensive, and it’s going to be really difficult to get the crafting materials you need in order to purchase it if you don’t have a half-decent Shadow trap.
2.5 million for what the Moonbeam trap can do is not too expensive. Sure, you may have planned for something else to spend your gold on, and I know at your stage of the game gold is relatively hard to come by. Still, this trap is worth it and will make going through Fort Rox much easier! Attempting that with Gorgon alone would be suicide! 🙂
And Moonbeam isn’t as good as the Interdimensional Crossbow, but it comes relatively close. So you won’t have to upgrade the instant you can. You could keep farming gold, upgrade later, and still have a decent Shadow trap to fall back on in the meantime.
So yeah, my advice would absolutely be to buy the Moonbeam! I don’t think you’ll regret it. If you’re short on gold, you can always sell excess charms and crafting materials on the marketplace for some quick cash.

Hi.. currently in the Living Gardern. Is Moonbeam Barrier Trap enough to get past this area or is it necessary to buy Interdimensional Crossbow? Thanks.

Necessary? No. You can get through that area with Moonbeam alone. You can even get through with lesser traps 🙂 Of course, the Crossbow would make things easier. It depends on your strategy and preferences.
Personally, I would probably get the best Shadow trap available to me first, but that’s just me. If you’d like to get through the Living Garden as soon as possible before you start something else, then Moonbeam will be able to carry you through. People have gone through there with worse Shadow traps back when it first opened 🙂

Will you add Queso Fount Trap? I don’t see it in the list.
Bunch of new traps and bases with the event now too I guess.
Thanks for doing this. It’s awesome 😎

Yeah, I haven’t updated the traps and bases page in a while. I started reworking it at some point, but I got stuck. I’m not sure how or when I’ll give it a new structure … until then it’ll stay outdated, I’m afraid.

can you use the tarannosauras trap instead of the droid archmagus in Fort Rox?

    • MozKa

      October 1, 2020 at 8:23 pm

No, Tarannosaurus is a Forgotten type trap, and Droid Archmagus is Arcane. Mice in Fort Rox can’t be caught with a Forgotten type trap, only Arcane and Shadow.

Hi MozKa, you need to update this page with RH season 8 bases

Maybe I’m missing something here but it doesn’t seem that you can skip the early Rift bases and go straight to Clockwork Base since it requires you to own the Fissure Base to buy.

You’re right! I must have been under a different impression for some reason. I’ll change what I wrote! Good catch! Thank you for making me aware of the mistake! 🙂

I looked through the rest of the guide, and it appears everywhere else where the bases are mentioned, I talk about their connection and I recommend to get them both! So must have been an oversight here, or maybe outdated advice that I never fixed. I’m glad it’s all correct now, wouldn’t wanna give conflicting advice 🙂

So pretty much everyone says the Elixir Exchanger Base is useless. But could it be useful to newcomers to the Valour Rift? By allowing you to collect sigils outside the tower and purchasing the early upgrades before even attempting your first run? Or are you still better off collecting sigils and upgrading the normal way?

      December 9, 2020 at 1:50 pm

The thing is, you need a lot of Gauntlet Elixirs to use for making tower cheese, and that’s a huge hassle! And I haven’t checked the numbers recently, but I think you can get more sigils hunting inside the tower. I know the devs intended this base for those who already have more elixirs than they can use, but I’m pretty much done with the Valour Rift, and I don’t have a huge excess in elixirs … Maybe I will in a few years if I keep getting elixirs here and there, for example from the GWH golems.

I don’t think the devs intended this base for those with too many elixirs but rather for those who’s just starting. That’s why I’m asking whether it could be useful to VRift newcomers. Especially people like me who has unlocked VRift but hasn’t started hunting in the area yet. The early upgrades that require only sigils cost 360 in total that’s 180 elixirs (can be gathered relatively quickly using Golems right now) you have to sacrifice in exchange for jumpstarting your first run. The question is whether it will be worth it.

It’s more or less what dev Dave said in an FBF recently about who they intended the base for: those that have hunted at the Valour Rift for a while and have excess elixirs 🙂

But I guess it makes sense what you say though, you can get free elixirs right now, without having to waste time hunting outside the tower. You could get the sigil-only upgrades this way and save a bit of time. That could well be worth it.

As always, this depends on lots of individual factors, so there’s no clear-cut reply that would satisfy every single hunter 🙂 What do you hate more: grinding for elixirs outside the tower or grinding for sigils inside the tower? Are you planning on acquiring elixirs (or Gauntlet String) solely by hunting outside the tower, or by other means as well? If you need to hunt outside the tower, will you use regular string cheese or Magical String (or even Gauntlet String)?

Depending on your answers to these questions, it may well be worth it to burn a few elixirs to get some sigils ahead of your first run. Personally, I’d probably do it. You’re right, it’s easier to get elixirs than sigils for you right now, so if there’s a way to turn elixirs into sigils, it probably makes sense to do so.

Ah I see, I don’t really follow FBF that closely. Or maybe it was during earlier FBF? Because I just returned to MH a couple of weeks ago actually. Not sure why veteran hunters would want to turn elixirs into sigils hahaha.

what your read on the Boiling Cauldron compared to the Droid Archmagus? Is that extra 500 power and 10% attraction bonus going to make a significant difference or could I possibly use charms or a great base to make up for it and use the Cauldron effectively in Fort Rox, Lost City, and Prickly Plains?

    • MozKa

      October 23, 2022 at 9:48 pm

When you have the Boiling Cauldron you can easily skip the Droid Archmagus and go for the next better Arcane trap once you get to it. 500 power and 10% attraction bonus is very little, your overall catch and attraction rate will only be influenced by this very marginally. In my opinion it’s not worth the 4.7 million gold the Droid Archmagus costs.
Sure, if you have more gold than you know what to do with, buy it, because even a small increase is better than nothing. But no, it’s not going to be a significant difference 🙂

Perfect! I definitely will be skipping it then. Am always looking for ways to skip a trap if I can hold out for something better and save my gold. Not that I’m hurting for gold necessarily, but I tend to horde it. Am an old player who just returned to the game recently and have started fresh. I remembered your guide being so helpful years ago and has remained helpful to me now. Thank you for all of your effort!

For the Hydro traps, should I get Rune Shark and then School of Sharks if I already have Chrome Phantasmis Oasis?

    • MozKa

      March 30, 2023 at 11:36 am

The Chrome POT is already pretty good, but the School of Sharks is undoubtedly better. Especially if you eventually plan to get the Chrome School of Sharks, currently the best Hydro trap in the game.
And even if you decide all that is too much of a hassle, I’d say at least get the Queso Fount trap. Much easier to acquire and already an improvement upon the Chrome POT.

Hi Mozka, do you recommend getting the Smoldering Stone Sentinel if I already have Chrome MonstroBot?

            • MozKa

              April 27, 2023 at 11:02 pm

Well, the Stone Sentinel is better. But I’m not sure if the increase in catch rate is worth the resources, time, and gold you’ll have to spend. I honestly don’t know how much better the catch rate would be. You can check with a catch rate calculator tool and decide if that’s worth it to you!
Personally, I always try to go for the very best trap. So I would probably get it (in fact, I did get it). But it’s not crucial. You can get through everything ahead of you with the Chrome Monstro. And keep in mind that once you make it to the Folklore Forest the Charming PrinceBot will outperform both Stone Sentinel and Chrome Monstro.
