The Rare Breeds

nugget mouseSome mice visit your traps more often than others.
Some almost never bother to stop by. How rude!
And most of the time, there‘s not much you can do about it.

Very early in the game you can theoretically attract the SB+ only breeds. All you need is SB+. Non-donators might gather SB+ here and there on the way through the game and decide to come back to the early regions at an advanced stage of their game. The Pebble, Tiny, Flying, Fog, Speedy, Magic, Frosty Snow, Silvertail, Nibbler, Farmhand and Black Widow can be collected this way. Basically people go from region to region that feature these mice, starting with the one featuring the most in one place.Mole

  • Black Widows can be attracted almost everywhere, sometimes even with region-specific bait like Radioactive Blue or Wicked Gnarly.
  • Moles are somewhat rare, but with patience you‘ll nab one sooner or later.
  • Crown Collector mice are a somewhat newer and unique addition to the game. These mice have a fancy for SB+, but that‘s not all. It gets easier to attract them once the number of Silver and Gold Crowns you have collected rises.
  • The Nugget Mouse has already been covered in the Digby with Limelight section of the Walkthrough. All you can do is wait and hope.
  • The rare breed of Furoma is the Assassin. Those are not only rare but also quite tough. You can attract them with standard cheese, but they are somewhat easier to attract with Maki or SB+. Good luck!
  • Forbidden Grove: A breed that is somewhat rare, although not terribly rare, is the Reaper. Ancient cheese is the way to go here.shelder
  • The Ship features some of the more rare mice: For Swabbie you can use Brie or Gouda (it is actually quite allergic to SB+), the Mermouse can be attracted with Brie, Gouda or, for best results, SB+, the Cook is a SB+ only mouse, and the Shelder (which can be attracted by all of the aforementioned cheese types) is the most rare non-event mouse in the whole game. For some people it takes months to get one, literally!
  • The latest addition to the Jungle of Dread, the Pygmy Wrangler, can be attracted by Gouda as well as SB+. It‘s only semi-rare.
  • The Tidal Fisher in Balack‘s Cove is also only semi-rare, it is attracted by Vanilla Stilton.
  • The Chrono Mouse in the Acolyte Realm is not only relatively rare, it is also pretty tough to catch.
  • The Seasonal Garden features two SB+ only breeds, one in Spring, one in Fall, the two Familiars.
  • In the Crystal Library, Tome Sprite is a SB+ only breed. The Aether however, while attracted by standard type cheeses, will simply come out more often if you use SB+. But Aethereven then it‘s not really abundant, on a level with Assassin probably.
  • As is the Desert Nomad in Muridae Market, easier to attract with SB+ than with standard cheese, but still somewhat rare. Although, probably not as rare as Aether. On top of that, MM features a SB+ only breed, the Desert Architect.
  • There‘s a SB+ only mouse in the Shoreline as well, the Living Ice Mouse.
  • With the Iceberg‘s unique mechanics, the Living Salt Mouse can be seen as partly rare. You‘d be lucky to get one during a normal Iceberg run, however, they are abundant once you’ve let the Iceberg smash all three bonus chests, or once you’re in the Hidden Depths.Drheller
  • General Drheller on the other hand, is clearly a rare mouse. You can only get him during the General stage. He barely ever comes out of hiding. And when he does, he‘s quite hard to catch. A strategy has surfaced to get him though: Get to the General stage, arm your weakest setup and intentionally fail to catch a General. That way you can see which one you’ve attracted (and that you‘ll attract for two more hunts). If it‘s not Drheller, don‘t change your setup and keep FTCing. Do that as long as it takes to attract Drheller, then change to your best setup and hope you can catch him during the next two encounters. Otherwise begin again. This is potentially very frustrating and can take days of FTCing, but is the only reliable way to make sure you‘ll get him if you don‘t want to wait for him to naturally be caught during some Iceberg run.
  • In Claw Shot City you might have problems attracting a Pyrite. SB+ helps to attract them a little easier, but regular cheese will also make that one come to your trap eventually.
  • On the train the most elusive mouse is the Magmatic Golem. Some hunters are lucky and get several early on when they use their first Magmatic Crystal charms, but several unfortunate souls, myself included, need dozens of Crystal charms before that guy even shows up. And Crystal charms are somewhat hard to come by…
  • Among the Gnawnian Rift mice, there are a few that are pretty rare when you don’t use Magical String, but relatively easy to attract with this special type of cheese. These are: Micro, Dream Drifter and Mighty Mole. The attraction rate for Wealth and Raw Diamond mice also climbs with Magical String, the best way to get these though is to use Riftiago.
  • In the Burroughs Rift there’s a Magical String-only mouse: The Portable Generator.
  • The Nightshade Masquerade in the Fungal Cavern is SB+ only. However, if you hunt with SB+, Mouldy Mole, Sporeticus, and Spore Muncher are somewhat on the rare side. These are easier to attract with standard cheeses like Brie or Gouda.
  • Of the Meteorite Miners, the Meteorite Mover is semi-rare, about 1 in 10 compared to every other mouse there.
  • The Sleepy Merchant of Queso Canyon is an SB+ only mouse.
  • The Homeopathic Apothecary in Moussu Picchu can only be attracted with Glowing Gruyere, while the Nightshade Maiden is SB+ only. In that same area, the Dragoon is relatively rare, but will eventually be caught through regular hunting.

Do you have numbers to back up that claim? Or is it just your personal experience? (In fact, I have no numbers to back up my claim that Shelder is the rarest… but I still think it is 😀 )

That’s what the Wiki is for 🙂
The Frostwing Commander does not qualify as a rare breed if you ask me. You definitely encounter him on your first Iceberg run, and after that the Wiki tells you that you can find him in abundance in the Hidden Depths. So you might have to wait until you go on your first Deep run to catch him again, but at least you know how to find him.

I have to agree with you. Based on experience and peoples tales. Shelder really is the hardest to attract. Based on time spent on a location and number of times attracted ( caught, missed, etc), Shelder really is the rarest of all.

Is there any truth to the rumors that Galleon Gouda is the unadvertised bait of choice for “successful” Shelder Hunters? One mouse hunting friend of mine makes this argument in favor of the notion, saying: “Since this exclusive cheese is only obtained as the hard won reward for completing the Tribal Shelder Treasure Map, it is obviously intended to console us – and give us gentle assurances that our next Shelder hunt will be easier, less unpleasant, and hopefully not as brutal….” Gosh, I almost want to believe this disillusioned but otherwise credible person, poor guy. But I must be jaded; for I remain unconvinced – based on my own experience which tells me that hunting the Shelder is for the cursed ones. I have two unremembered Shelder catches on my profile that happened way back when my Ship still had that “New Ship Smell”, and I didn’t yet know the significance such a catch, Damn you, Shelder !!
These days, I always decline every invitation to hunt that particular map, for I will not soon forget the harsh sting of indignation and wounded pride at having used every last pretty piece of Galleon Gouda I once had. Maybe someday I will find some optimism and try doing a High Seas tourney – so I can be the hero of the team when I make a critical surprise catch and bag a Shelder for extra tourney points – right at the last horn, and just in time to win first place!! How impressive would that be, right? :p
(I just wanted to share that, and if you made it this far, thanks so much for listening)

lol, thank you, Sheryl, for that beautiful sentiment 😀

As for your question: I too thought that Galleon Gouda must have been given to us to increase our Shelder attraction rates. Unfortunately http://www.horntracker.com speaks a different language. Galleon Gouda attracts a Shelder roughly 1% of the time (from a sample size of almost 5000 hunts). Sadly I couldn’t check the attraction rates for Gouda and SuperBrie, because Horntracker acted up. But if my memory serves me right, the attraction rate of SuperBrie was about twice that of Galleon Gouda.
However, what Galleon Gouda seems to do is significantly boost the attraction rates of Captains, Leviathans, Squeakens, and Mermice, which are typically the harder to silver mice on the ship. So it seems Galleon Gouda is a way for those that collect silver crowns to more easily get a few of those.

        RE: Galleon Gouda
I have to retract that statement. Today I learned that GG really is your best bet for Shelder, far outweighing SB+. So don’t always believe everything I say, I make mistakes, too 😀

I caught the Shelder yesterday when I was trying for the Cook using SB+. Third day in a row trying for the Cook. I have caught the Cook and Shelders before using SB+, but Shelder showed it’s head before the Cook this time.

          In the SS Huntington:

Galleon Gouda gives a 1% chance of a Shelder attraction… which beats the 0.2% of SB+, or the 0.19% with normal Gouda (the difference is in the chance that normal Gouda will fail to attract a mouse at all: if you pile on sufficient attraction bonuses to get the 100% attraction rate with Gouda that you get with SB+, you’ll get an 0.2% Shelder attraction rate with Gouda too.)

Mermouse is a LOT more common with Galleon Gouda, you can get a nearly 7% attraction rate on it: it’s about a 2% rare with other cheeses. As pointed out, Leviathan and Squeaken are also more common with Galleon Gouda than with SB+ – but then they’re about 5% rate with SB+ anyway, so “uncommon but not that rare”.

Swabbie is in fact rarer than the Shelder with SB+, but ten times more common with plain Gouda. However, he does not show up for Galleon Gouda at all – and neither does the SB+-only Cook mouse.

          Elsewhere…

Two rare mice in Bristle Woods present themselves (but not very often): the Chrono Mouse in the Acolyte Realm, and the Reaper Mouse in the Forbidden Grove.

In the Burroughs Rift, the rarest is probably the Prototype mouse, which shows itself only at low mist levels when using String cheeses.

In Digby with Limelight Cheese, the Nugget is about a 0.5% catch rate – more than the Shelder with Gouda or SB+, but with no way to improve the catch rate. (Shelder with Galleon Gouda is more common than the Nugget: but Galleon Gouda is harder to get since someone has to catch a Shelder to get it, and at best you’re going to average about thirty pieces of GG per rare Shelder map: it is much easier to get large quantities of Limelight Cheese.)

It should be noted, in comparison with the Nugget, that the Big Bad Burroughs Mouse is about five or six times more common – but also, with most physical traps, about five times harder to catch, and thus actual catches of the BBB may tag along at similar levels to catches of the Nugget. Once you get to Chrome Monstrobot levels, though, BBB catches should pull ahead.

Another thing that needs to be pointed out: Some events have involved hunting with special cheeses, such as the Olympics’ “Runny Cheese”, at normal locations such as the Harbour. This has been known to do weird things to mouse populations: it was reported that the attraction rate of the Shelder with Runny Cheese during the Olympic event was briefly as high as 2%! It was however subsequently reduced to 1%, matching Galleon Gouda: and since the end of the event, Runny Cheese no longer attracts it (or anything else much) at all. Similar phenomena were observed with Dumpling Cheese during the 2017 Lunar New Year event.

Hi Mozka, your guide really did help me a lot in my game play, thanks for the hard work you gave in. I am a duke now,and I am now broke so I have decided to sell some of my SB+ since I barely used them (I think only once for catching a black widow), so should I put them all into marketplace or keep some? May I have your advice please. Thank you

Well, apart from using SB+ as bait it can be very useful in the form of Magic Essence in crafting recipes. I wouldn’t be so quick to get rid of it, it can pay off to craft certain hard to obtain cheeses with it, in the Living Garden, in the Fungal Cavern, in the Labyrinth … You can always make more gold, but unless you regularly donate for SB+, it is definitely harder to obtain. Just my thoughts though, in the end it’s all about what you want/need for your individual game right now 🙂

Any trick to catching the Black Widow in the Mountains? I’ve caught them elsewhere, but it’s the only one I have left to catch in the Mountains and haven’t been able to catch one yet. I’m a Baron and just trying to get that third star for the Mountains on the Travel map.

Arm SB+ and be patient 🙂 I don’t think there’s anything else you can do.

I am having a huge amount of bad luck trying to nab a fog mouse, and there are no blatant tips for me to use. My trap strength is enough for it to be ‘easy’ but I still can’t get it and it is super brie only. I have wasted nearly 50 pieces trying to nab one. It’s the very last mouse on the map I am on.

After failing at the harbour I am trying in the mountains. Any hints?

Map Solver and Mouse Finder states that Fog mice are indeed best hunted in the Mountains (attraction rate of 7% compared to only 4.9% in Harbour).
      Good luck 🙂

Leviathan and balack extreme hard to find or catch, no matter what trap setup?

    • MozKa

      March 26, 2018 at 10:14 pm

The Leviathan is one of the tougher and slighty rarer mice on the SS Huntington, but with a bit of perseverance it shouldn’t be too hard to get one sooner or later.
Balack is the boss of Balack’s Cove, so he’s not easy to catch, and the stronger the setup, the better your chances. Good luck!

Is it just me or is there no info about the Chrono mouse? i see acolyte but it ends at acolyte too, the chrono is hard to catch but it seems the crystal mineral crusher and ancient charms and the runic base makes overpowering turn to just difficult status.. but have caught 0 yet

I have tried to hunt the spore muncher for 4 days in a row but still not even one was attracted. Any idea why?

      May 27, 2019 at 10:23 pm

What kind of cheese are you using? Try regular Brie. The Spore Muncher doesn’t like SB+, and even Gouda is kind of icky to it 🙂

Been hunting on the ss Huntington and caught a shelter after 3days how unusual is this?

    • MozKa

      February 6, 2022 at 10:55 pm

Not unusual at all. Sometimes it takes a long time, other times you’re lucky and it only takes a few days or less. Like with all mice in this game, it’s always down to random chance.
